Course Description
Newly updated, this dynamic training program by Miraflor & Associates
was created to provide an in-depth learning experience in utilization
review, case management, and discharge planning processes. The program
will enhance the newcomer’s ability to enter the field of managed care
with a strong foundation. The course provides two days of classroom
study of the concepts of utilization review, case management, and
discharge planning, and an experienced-based understanding during two
days of on-site practicum. Miraflor & Associates is pleased to be on
the cutting edge of managed care training with this innovative program.
Four key topics will be covered:
- Managed care concepts
- Utilization review process
- Case Management process
- Discharge planning concepts
Our unique program includes:
- Two classroom days of lecture, group discussion and exercises.
- Two onsite practicum days at a local host hospital.
- The opportunity to practice skills and apply new knowledge
immediately.
Course Objectives
The objectives of this practical training program:
- Discuss managed care and insurance concepts.
- Describe the utilization review process.
- Explain and apply utilization criteria, using standard utilization
review documentation.
- Describe the case management process.
- Explain discharge planning concepts, including screening, criteria,
and process.
- Perform a discharge planning assessment.
Students who are successful in this program will have a strong
fundamental knowledge of certain managed care processes and will have
acquired many valuable hands-on skills. This experience should improve
employment potential in a marketplace that requires experience to get
started. Clinical experience is an important component in the equation.
Prerequisites
1. All students enrolling in this program must have at
least 2000 hours (1-year full-time, 2-years part-time) of clinical
practice as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical / Vocational Nurse,
Medical Doctor, or allied health care professional (PT, OT, ST, MSW,
LCSW, Chiropractor, etc.)
2. In order to successfully complete this program, all
students must participate in the onsite practicum on the final two days
of the series. Because of this, Miraflor & Associates requires that
clear copies of the following documentation be provided no
later than the first day of the program:
- Current and valid professional (or paraprofessional) license
issued in any U.S. state
- Current and valid CPR card
- Proof of current Health Insurance coverage
- Current negative TB skin test, or physician documentation
3. Effective November 1, 2004, JCAHO is requiring a
background check of all staff, students and volunteers who provide
care, treatment or services to patients. Due to the nature of the
onsite practicum, all students who participate in this seminar are
subject to this new JCAHO standard. This background check includes, but
may not be limited to, criminal history, Social Security verification,
and OIG name search. Once you complete the registration for this course
(see Fee section below), Miraflor & Associates will contact you
regarding appropriate Disclosure and Privacy Act information and
obtaining your authorization to proceed with the background check. If
you have questions about any of these items, please

Day 3 - Discharge Planning/Onsite Practicum
Day 4 - Onsite Practicum
NOTE: Attendance and participation for all four days is
required in order to receive CEH credit for this seminar. No partial
credit will be given.
Additionally, we offer preceptorship training for additional hands-on
practicum to any who have successfully completed this seminar. Eight
(8) contact hours would be earned for each day completed. Contact

no later than the first day of the program. Although all efforts will
be made to hold the onsite practicum on the final two days of the
program, we may be forced to reschedule the practicum date for any
number of reasons to accommodate our host clients.
